As soon as I saw the light setup in some of the sound check photos people posted, I knew there were going to get 2 kinds of reactions to photos from the SPWF show.

1. Awesome!

2. @#$%^ Lights!

Unfortunately I also knew most reactions would be #2.

I didn’t even realize the haze would be there too. I’m not a professional lighting person, so I can’t comment from that side. But as a photographer, I hate lights from behind during a show. If you’re planning for it during a shoot, great! Or for a small part of a show so you can plan a cool shot, great! And that’s just from the point of view of trying to get a photo and knowing the setup in advance..

PPS. From what I’ve seen, SPG put on a great show as usual, no matter the setup.

PPPS. All this isn’t even taking into account the Piscataway Pole!

I prefer a white scrim behind us that’s lighted to change colors.

“Audience Blinders” can be cool for that “rock concert” feel every once in awhile, but since our act requires you to look at the robot characters, lights pointed at the audience get old fast.

Our lighting setup for the La Jolla Playhouse shows here in San Diego were much more geared towards our act, and I think the photos Beth and James took reflect that.

But that’s one of the possible unpredictable factors about a SPG live show out-of-state/San Diego for the audience and the band…you never know what kind of light setup there will be!
Sometimes we get our input, but most of the time it’s a lighting designer designing on the fly after seeing our sound check.

It’s good to know that the lighting wasn’t really up to you guys, but I wish there was someone I could talk to about the red-and-blue consecutive light that flashed at some moments. It gave me a pretty massive headache (good thing I’m mom-ish and had medication with me) but my bigger concern is whether that kind of flashy lighting can trigger seizures.

Honestly, this scene made me feel choked up, because Azula obviously craved her Mother’s love, like Zuko had, but because she was so much more taken under her Father’s ‘wing’ as it were, she became a twisted version of who she would have been.

And this scene. This fucking scene.

Just take a step back and think:

Her Mother is a hallucination here.

Azula is bitterly saying ‘Even you fear me.’ And back at Ember Island, you learn that, even though she was a tiny terror, she was hurt because her Mother was scared of her.

And the one thing that breaks Azula is the fact that a part of her knows exactly what her Mother would say. And she’d tell her she loves her.

And she wouldn’t be angry, or disappointed. She’d be sad.

This is a clay pot, glazed and sculpted, completed around… March, I think! It took a while, but I’m very pleased with how it came out. The top of the hat came out extremely rough and dry, which was kind of disappointing, though. The only probable causes of that were either that the kiln gave off too much heat or I didn’t layer enough glaze. Oh, well! I’m happy with it.
